Greenpeace Andino activists climb the entrance to La Rural and display an 18-meter sign with the legend “Ranchers: the owners of the fire. Wetlands Law Now”. With this activity on public roads, the environmental organization points to the agricultural sector as the main responsible for the fires in the country and denounces that the Rural Society is pressing for Congress not to sanction the Wetlands Law. “We urgently need a National Wetlands Law and that the destruction of forests and wetlands and intentional fires be penalized,” says Leonel Mingo, coordinator of the Greenpeace Climate and Energy Campaign. So far this year, more than 900,000 hectares have been affected by fires in 22 provinces, of which 8 have active sources.
