The Dead Sea region is one of the most unique natural wonders on earth. But for decades, it has been a victim of aggressive, offensive, and dangerous industrial activity under the auspices of "Israel Chemicals" the Ofer family-owned corporation. Now there is a new threat of destruction in the region, if approval is granted for Re'em company's plan for devastating and outdated oil shale production at the Rotem plant. Oil shale is one of the most polluting methods to produce energy and the project at Rotem will poison the area's air and soil. Utilizing such a carbon-intensive and polluting fuel will drag Israel decades backward as the world struggles with the climate crisis and transitions to renewable energy. Greenpeace Israel calls the minister of energy and the local planning committee to stop the oil shale disaster.

אזור ים המלח הוא אחד מפלאי הטבע הייחודים עלי אדמות ופנינת טבע ייחודית בישראל. אלא שכבר עשרות שנים שהוא קורבן לפעילות תעשייתית אגרסיבית, פוגענית ומסוכנת בניצוח ״כימיקלים לישראל״, התאגיד בבעלות משפחת עופר.

לאורך השנים ממשלות ישראל נתנו יד חופשית לתאגידים לנצל את משאבי הטבע הציבוריים של אזור ים המלח ולגרוף לכיסם רווחי ענק תוך הפקרות סביבתית מוחלטת.

אזור ים המלח, המוכה גם כך ממשבר האקלים והניצול התעשייתי הבלתי מרוסן של כי״ל, ניצב כעת בפני סכנת חורבן חדש, אם תאושר תוכנית חברת רא"ם להפקת נפט מפצלי שמן בשיטה הרסנית ומיושנת באתר רותם.

כריית פצלי שמן היא השיטה ההרסנית ביותר להפקת נפט: היא מרעילה את הקרקע, מבזבזת מים, מזהמת את האוויר ומסוכנת לאקלים. ניצול דלק כה מזהם יחזיר את ישראל עשרות שנים אחורה בזמן שהעולם בהובלת ארה״ב עובר לאנרגיה מתחדשת.
