Serra de Ricardo Franco State Park was created in 1997, and holds 158 thousand hectares in the Brazilian frontier with Bolivia, in the state of Mato Grosso. The area should be protected due to its significant biodiversity, in a region where the Amazon, Cerrado and Pantanal meet. But problems in the process of implementing and overseeing this Conservation Unit status make the forest an easy target for land grabbers and cattle ranchers.
