Greenpeace activists are planting an approximately eight meter high English oak tree at the end of the controversial A49 highway in Hesse, Germany. With the slogan "Forest instead of asphalt" they are demonstrating for a new transport planning that neither destroys nature nor fuels the climate crisis.

A published study on behalf of Greenpeace shows that the fragmentation of the Dannenröder forest by the construction of the A49 freeway far beyond the cleared area, leads to a weakening of the forest. The separation of contiguous areas by a freeway leads to rising temperatures in the forest. It is thus more exposed to increasing extreme weather conditions such as heat and drought.
