The Caley Valley Wetlands are a delicate ecosystem, breeding grounds for endangered and vulnerable turtles and birds and an important filter for water running into the Great Barrier Reef. They surround Abbot Point, the focal point of the rapid industrialisation of the Reef for coal and gas. If recent proposals go through, the seabed would be dredged and the acid sulphate dredge-spoil would be dumped on the delicate wetlands. The dredge spoil, worsening coal dust and the new infrastructure will damage the wetlands and the vulnerable species that rely on them.
