Karen Telleen-Lawton poses in the backyard of her home in Santa Barbara which was damaged by the Jesusita Fires in May 2009. Her family's backyard was badly burned, but advance preparations protected her home from the fires. Some of her neighbours were not so prepared or lucky. Santa Barbara County officials report that the fire started May 5 in the Cathedral Peak area and spread to 8,733 acres destroying 80 homes and one commercial property. Some 30 firefighters were injured fighting the blaze with damage estimated at $17 million. The fire was contained and evacuation orders lifted May 13.
