Many of Singrauli's coal blocks are currently in the process of being converted from “no-go” zones to “go” areas courtesy vigorous negotiations within various arms of the government. Two of these include Mahan to be let out to Essar and Hindalco companies and Chhatrasal to Reliance's Sasan operations. By now, the villagers of Singrauli are all too familiar with the pattern of loss of having witnessed denudation ever since mining activity increased in the area approximately three decades back. Forests which were once alive and thriving, today stand converted into mine overburdens. This trend continues even as many new thermal power plants and their housing colonies (like that of Jaypee in Nigri, Singrauli district, MP) are being constructed partly on forest land.
