As Japan's Prime Minister Yoshiro Mori met with George W. Bush at the White House, Greenpeace diplomats delivered him a demarche, demanding that Japan stop whaling immediately. It read, "Japan: The World Is Watching. Stop the Whaling!" and was stuck on the end of a seven foot harpoon. In the past year, the U.S. and 14 other nations have formally condemned Japanese whaling practices. Japan kills over 500 whales each year, including species such as Sperm and Bryde's, which are endangered under U.S. law. Japan claims that the whaling is for scientific purposes, but the whale meat is sold as a delicacy. Japan has a history of exploiting loopholes in conservation treaties to continue its commercial hunt.
