15 Greenpeace activists chain themselves to railway lines in Chiasso to prevent the progress of a train of 20 tank-cars containing highly explosive and carcinogenic vinyl chloride. Every week the trains carry up to 1000 tons of the compound running through industrial and residential areas on their way from Belgium and West Germany to the Solvay plant in Italy.
With this action, Greenpeace wants to reinforce the citizens' protests and parliamentary initiatives against the infamous 'toxic trains’.
Greenpeace appeals to the federal councilor Adolf Ogi to forbid the transport of highly explosive and carcinogenic vinyl chloride.
