Shoot: Seabound - Oceans of Slavery (Videos)

GP0STUBSI
Investigation of Indonesian migrant fishermen.
The report "Seabound: The Journey to Modern Slavery on the High Seas" shines a spotlight on the inhumane working conditions of migrant fishers who commonly work onboard foreign distant water fishing fleets.
The fishing industry remains one of the most profitable, valued at around $153bn annually. Overexploitation of coastal water resources and dwindling fish populations compel the industry to increase fishing efforts in the high seas, which often results in illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing. To sustain it, the industry often depends on a reliable workforce of cheap labour - mostly poor migrant fishers in Southeast Asia. Through direct interviews, paper trail and corroborative information, Seabound: The Journey to Modern Slavery reveals a shady system of recruitment and how migrant fishers are unjustly paid.

The videos in this shoot were made in collaboration with SBMI.
Established on February 25, 2003, Serikat Buruh Migran Indonesia (also known as the Indonesian Migrant Workers Union or “SBMI”) is an organisation operated by former, present, or aspiring Indonesian migrant workers and their families.
The organisation aims to bolster the welfare and rights of Indonesian migrant workers through advocacy work, client support, education, and economic empowerment. SBMI was later recognised as a Trade Union in 2006.
