The Oceanlinx company has the only full scale operational wave generator currently deployed, according to Stuart Beaseley, Managing Director. The town of Portland, Victoria, will gain the first commercially operating wave power generator, however, it will be one to two kilometres offshore; the bit sticking up out of the water will appear as a tiny dot to Portland residents. The technology works using an oscillating column of water, which pushes air into a turbine to generate electricity. In the swell it pushes air into the chamber, and as the wave drops it sucks air back through. An elegant design, which means the massive force of the wave is captured in both directions, maximizing power output. Ultimately, an array of wave power units could supply power to a whole city, and contribute to base load power as part of a clean energy future. After the Portland project, Oceanlinx is ready to go ahead with installations in Hawaii, South Africa, Portugal and Spain.
