The Sundarbans is a fragile set of islands which is particularly vulnerable to the increasing threat of climate change. The rivers that pour down from the Himalayas and empty into the Bay of Bengal have swollen and shifted in recent decades. This has resulted in increased flooding, threatening the local communities and agriculture as crops are swept away by floods or contaminated with water.
