Shoot: Indonesian Rainforest Destruction and Palm Plantations
GP01W6L
Greenpeace New Zealand staff traveled to Sumatra in August 2009 to document rainforest destruction due to the expansion of the palm oil industry. Led by communications manager Suzette Jackson the group included independent journalist from the Sunday Star Times, farmer Max Purnell and an Indonesian based documentary team. The expedition exposed New Zealand’s role in rainforest destruction through its largest dairy cooperative Fonterra. In 2008 one quarter of the world’s production of palm kernel animal feed was imported into New Zealand with the majority going to feed Fonterra’s dairy herd.
