Shoot: Mangrove Forests and Shrimp Farms in Mexico

GP016D
Campaign against shrimp farming to protect mangroves forests. Laguna de Terminos is a protected area in the Gulf of Mexico (Campeche). An aquaculture project is in process of being approved by the government. Acua Eco is the name of the company promoting this 3000 hectares of ponds project as soon as possible and they are waiting only the approval of the EIA by the government. Another problem is the introduction of a non-native (alien) species. The shrimp species that they want to cultivate comes from the pacific coast. This shrimp can be invasive and carries diseases like the White spot virus. If this project is approved, the bylaws of Laguna de Terminos will be by-passed.
