Greenpeace blocks the chlorine outflow of Shell in Pernis. With the slogan 'Shell: chloorvrij kan wel!', which translates to English as 'Shell: chlorine free is possible!', Greenpeace protests against the biggest discharger of chlorine in the Netherlands, who says to have no money to go clean. Shell discharges extremely toxic chlorine under water. To make the outflow visible, Greenpeace divers hang hoses in the discharge point and with a pump they bring the toxic waste discharge above the water. Since the fifties Shell produces epichloorhydrine (ECH), that is used to make epoxyhars. The production causes a lot of chlorine waste and polluted waste water. Epoxyhars is used for the production of all sorts of glue, paint and coatings. It contains no chlorine, but in the production process chlorine is used. There are production alternatives without using chlorine, but Shell thinks they are too expensive. According to Greenpeace Shell must however invest in clean alternatives to be able to produce in 2000 chlorine free, which is agreed on internationally. (see also shoot GP011OS)
