Thirty Greenpeace activists returned 18 barrels with hazardous toxic waste from the Bhopal Disaster to the European headquarters of Dow Chemicals.
The police prevented the lift off of a hot air balloon in the form of a globe with the inscription "Clean up toxic mess!" on the site of Dow. The Basel customs prevented the import of more barrels of toxic waste from Bhopal earlier this morning. ‘Confiscated because of suspected hazardous waste’, was the verdict. However, on the site of the abandoned factory in Bhopal are tons of this toxic waste lying around since 1984. This waste is polluting the people and the environment every day.
The 18 barrels delivered to Dow Chemicals today are a symbol for the 18 years of suffering of the people in Bhopal.
Along with the toxic waste Dow received a guide for a total clean up of the monstrous disaster site in Bhopal. Drum beats on metal barrels accompanied the handover. The toxic waste is a mixture of approximately 300 kilograms of high pesticide waste - including the then in Bhopal manufactured pesticide Sevin- and the product BHC (a mixture of toxic chemicals, which destroy the nervous system, kidney and liver and can cause pregnant women to pass it on to their unborn child).
