A paragliding activist landed on the roof of the reactor dome of the Nuclear Power Plant Mühleberg. The activist hung a banner from the dome reading in German: "AKW Mühleberg stilllegen. JA am 24.9" ("Closing Down Nuclear Power Plant Mühleberg: YES on 24.9"). More Greenpeace activists decorated the entrance of the nuclear power plant with 500 sunflowers. The activists pointed out that the citizens of Bern have the opportunity on September 24th to make the canton of Bern and Switzerland safer and to make a start with energy transition in Switzerland. Greenpeace considers the rapid closure of the old reactor necessary.
The Nuclear Power Plant Mühleberg has been struggling with serious corrosion problems at the mantle, which surrounds the reactor core, for years. In 1990 cracks were discovered in the walls which have been growing year after year. The most affected annular weld seam has a total length of 152 centimeters. In last year alone, these cracks have grown by 12 centimeters. The power plant is also poorly protected against earthquakes and airplane crashes. Greenpeace is campaigning for a "Yes" vote on the initiative ('Bern without Atoms') to close Mühleberg down.
