Shoot: Nuclear Memorial for Gemma D'Arcy At Nuclear Power Plant in Gösgen Switzerland

GP01UJ5
Over a thousand candles are burning at the nuclear power plant in Gösgen for the victims of nuclear waste reprocessing. Two hundred persons, who responded to a Greenpeace call, participate in a memorial for the six years old Gemma D'Arcy, who grew up near the British reprocessing plant Sellafield, and died of leukemia. The participants ask Switzerland in a resolution to stop the reprocessing. Before the memorial, many Swiss citizens sent hundreds of candles to have them lit by Greenpeace in their name. In the immediate surroundings of Sellafield 14 times more children suffer from leukemia than the national average. But instead of solving the nuclear waste problem with reprocessing, it multiplies it. Susan D'Arcy, Gemma's mother, said in her message to the participants of the memorial: "When Gemma's death is supposed to have meaning, then it must be change - a fundamental change in our attitude towards the nuclear industry." The radioactive contamination by the reprocessing plant at Sellafield is happening insidiously: New measurements by Greenpeace show that the environment around Sellafield is now contaminated similar to the region around the Chernobyl reactor disaster. This summer pigeons had to be shot down and stored as nuclear waste because they contained plutonium. The spinach in Sellafield radiates at 8000 becquerels per kilo. And Ireland and Scandinavia have repeatedly protested against the radioactive dumping into the sea because it contaminates their shores. But regardless of such measurements, Switzerland continues to deliver nuclear waste to Sellafield.
