The PLTU Cilacap coal-fired power plant was opened in 2006. The original aim of building the plant was to encourage local economic growth. Many new jobs had been created. But despite the initial hope, the real cost to the Southeast Java town soon became shockingly clear. The pollution from the plant has had serious effects on the health of the people living in the surrounding. A huge number of people suffer from respiratory-related diseases. Many people have been driven away by the coal dust and constant humming coming from the plant.
