Shoot: Genetic Engineering Action Ship Victory C in Rotterdam

GP01KT3
Greenpeace activists today demanded the Dutch government stop the off-loading of cargo ship 'Victory C', carrying U.S. genetically engineered maize, to prevent its illegal distribution across Europe. The ship is supposed to off-load 50.000 tons of genetically engineered maize corn gluten.
A shipment of US maize corn from New Orleans, which is suspected to contain unauthorised GE maize docked in Rotterdam harbour, less than 48 hours after the European Union banned any imports from America that are not certified free of Bt10 – a genetically modified maize not licensed in the EU. Greenpeace demands that the ship be forced to return to America with its cargo intact.
“The Dutch government must act today to stop this unauthorised GE cargo from being distributed across Europe,” said Ulrike Brendel from Greenpeace. “The EU has sent a clear signal that this kind of genetically modified maize is not wanted. If it is off loaded it will be impossible to trace.”

The Victory C cargo is just a small part of a GE fleet coming from the U.S to Europe. In 2003 3.5 Mio tonnes of maize gluten were imported to the EU (Eurostat 2004). Despite significant rejection of GE in food and animal feed by European consumers, biotech companies are making it increasingly difficult to police their imports by failing to provide authorities with adequate testing methods.
Before the EU ban was agreed last week it was estimated by the EU Commission that 1,000 tons of illegal Bt10 products had been imported into European markets.

Greenpeace activists collected samples from the cargo of the 'Victory C'.
