After a large storm damaged and sunk several ships in the Black Sea, 7,000 tons of sulphur and 2,000 tons of heavy oil ran out into the sea. Fuel oil is a heavy substance that is sinking to the seabed and is a serious environmental disaster. About 30,000 birds have become victims of the oil spill. The polluted area is at the heart of the migration route from central Siberia into the Black Sea of red-throated and black-throated Siberian divers.
