Greenpeace activists carry out an action against the cargo ship East Ambition. The ship is transporting a shipment of palm kernel expeller (PKE) animal feed from Indonesia that is destined for Fonterra dairy farms. In 2008, 4.7 million tonnes of palm kernel expeller was exported globally. In 2008, New Zealand imported around one quarter of the world's production of PKE (1.1 million tonnes valued at NZ$317 million).
Greenpeace is calling on John Key, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, to halt imports of palm kernel due to its impact on deforestation and climate change and address intensive dairy farming in New Zealand. The ship’s cargo has contributed to the release of up to 364,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. That’s the same as the emissions from 127,000 cars over a year.
