Seawall on Majuro Atoll, Marshall Islands
A woman stands on a seawall on Majuro Atoll.
King tides have affected this end of the island particularly with many houses in the area damaged and abandoned due to flooding and coastal erosion. Damage is often so severe that families abandon houses and look to build anew or stay with other family members. Sea walls are increasingly being built to protect homes and land from king tides, which have increased significantly in the last decade. Inundation continues to affect sources of fresh drinking water and crops across the Marshall Islands.

Climate Change Impacts in the Marshall Islands
King tides and coastal flooding have been worsening in the Marshall Islands. Located on low-lying coral atolls, these islands are extremely susceptible to sea level rise and king tides. Adaptation efforts across Majuro Atoll are already being widely used - including building sea walls, elevating houses and climate-proofing infrastructures.
King tides have affected the Rita end of Majuro Atoll particularly with many houses in the area damaged and abandoned due to flooding and coastal erosion.
