Street artist Judmar Emerenciana in Bonaire

Street artist Judmar Emerenciana made this mural to draw attention to the consequences of climate change for Bonaire. Bonaire is in danger of being hit hard if no action is taken. One fifth of the island will be flooded. People may lose their jobs, land and important cultural heritage as a result of climate change. The slave huts depicted are a historically important and protected monument.

Judmar says: “We are in danger of losing our culture. But it's not too late, this warning comes just in time for us to act. I don't want the slave huts to be flooded in the future, and we think, 'We could have prevented this'."

The mural can be seen on Bonaire at the ruins of the Esmeralda Hotel.

Street artist Judmar Emerenciana in Bonaire (Dutch Caribbean)

If no action is taken, Bonaire will be seriously impacted by climate change. A study conducted by the Vrije Universiteit of Amsterdam (VU Amsterdam), and commissioned by Greenpeace Netherlands, shows the severe impacts of global warming on the Dutch Caribbean island. The rising sea level threatens to swallow up one fifth of the island by the end of this century, coral reefs will disappear and heat waves will increase. For the people living on Bonaire, life will never be the same. The Dutch government, which has been responsible for the special municipality since 2010, has put no dedicated policies in place to protect the low-lying island against the effects of climate change. Greenpeace Netherlands and residents of Bonaire demand climate justice for the island and are preparing a lawsuit against the Dutch state.
