World Oceans Day in Kenya
A beach cleanup activity and plastic audit was held at Nyali beach Mombasa, Kenya. A total of 1,018 kgs of plastic waste was collected by Greenpeace Africa volunteers alongside other organisations. The purpose of the plastic audit was to determine the brands, types and quantities of plastic waste collected and to expose the big polluters of our oceans & beaches.
We proceeded to Tudor Creek where we partnered with the local community to plant 200 mangrove seedlings. Mangrove cover is depleting at an alarming rate and this poses a significant threat to coastal communities and wildlife. This activity aimed at restoring these critical habitats. We had a total of 80 people (volunteers and community members) join us on this activity. 9 new community based organisations were engaged and are ready to join our network and partner on future projects.
