Don´t Make A Wave Committee
The core of the 1970/71 "Don't Make A Wave Committee", which became Greenpeace (from right): Irving Stowe, a lawyer, Paul Côté, a law student and Canadian Olympic medalist in sailing, and Jim Bohlen, a forestry scientist and engineer. Stowe and Bohlen were long-standing peace activists.
Bohlen, a World War II veteran, had once worked on development of Spartan missiles for the US military; Stowe, a Quaker, brought the idea of bearing witness into the organization. Stowe died in 1974. Boheln was among the founders of the Green Party of Canada and was Director of Greenpeace Canada for a while.
This is part of a photographic record of the very first Greenpeace voyage, which departed Vancouver on the 15th September 1971. Bohlen served on the crew. The aim of the trip was to halt nuclear tests in Amchitka Island by sailing into the restricted area. The picture was taken in mid-September 1971, shortly before the Phyllis Cormack (rechristened the Greenpeace) left for Amchitka.
