“No Deep Sea Mining” – Action in Rotterdam (Drone)
Greenpeace activists from Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and Switzerland approach the vessel, named Hidden Gem, by water to deploy a banner reading “No Deep Sea Mining”. The Swiss-owned drilling ship, is in port to receive extensive renovations which will allow to mine metals and rare earths in the deep sea in the future. The work is being carried out in partnership with Canadian firm The Metals Company (formerly DeepGreen), who plan at-sea trials in 2022. The protest takes place at the same time, the responsible International Seabed Authority ISA in Kingston, Jamaica, is discussing under which conditions deep-sea mining can start as early as July 2023.
