Abandoned Toxic Waste Dumps in Hungary
On the edge of the town of Kiskunhalas, a huge amount of dangerous waste is stored in conditions perhaps even worse than the infamous site of Illatos Road, Budapest. In addition, there is another illegal toxic deposit not far away from here, in a forest edge, close to a Natura 2000 area. Here, residues of paints and solvents, rusty, open barrels full of liquids and dangerous veterinary waste can be found. Greenpeace Hungary, together with local green NGOs Vasvarjú Conservationist Foundation and Csemete Association, expects authorities to clean up the contaminated sites as soon as possible, with state intervention if needed, and to transport the waste to secure repositories. The costs should be covered by the company responsible for the contamination, and the "polluter pays" principle should be adopted in the legislation, to avoid similar situations in the future.
