Banner Action at NUON Headquarters in Amsterdam
25 Greenpeace activists entered the NUON headquarters and when reaching a transparent glass meeting room five activists have sealed themselves inside. Campaigner Faiza Oulahsen launched a livestream connection that can be followed via Facebook.
Climbers have deployed a large banner from the roof reading “NUOFF, sluit de kolencentrale!” (in English: NUOFF, close the coal plant!).
Greenpeace is demanding serious negotiations with the CEO of energy company NUON for the swift shutdown of the old coal fired power plant along the Hemweg in Amsterdam.
Greenpeace has been campaigning for twenty years against the polluting coal plant in Amsterdam. This NUON operated coal plant emits 4 million tons of CO 2 per year, equivalent
to the annual emissions of 1.8 million cars. In addition the plant has considerable particle emissions, which cause health problems for nearby residents.
For two years NUON has stated that they are open to closing the coal plant, but are insisting on a compensation payment of 55 million Euro from the government.
