The disaster occurred in the Indian city of Bhopal when a Union Carbide chemical plant released 40 tonnes of highly toxic methyl isocyanate. The disaster killed thousands and the polluted site of the abandoned factory still leaks poisons into the groundwater of local residents. Dow Chemical bought Union Carbide in 2001, but will not accept any responsibility for the clean up of the contaminated site.
