Activists Scale ExxonMobil Rig in Norway on Valdez Anniversary
On the 25th anniversary of the Exxon Valdez oil spill in Alaska, Greenpeace climbers take action in Norway against an ExxonMobil oil rig scheduled to drill in the Russian Arctic. The activists board the West Alpha rig in the early hours of the morning, climbing the stairs of one of the legs and unfurling a banner saying “No Exxon Valdez in Russian Arctic.” One activist is dressed in a polar bear costume. Through this action, Greenpeace is calling for a ban on offshore oil drilling in the Arctic and for renewed efforts to fight climate change.
