Mpumalanga province is the fourth worst NO2 pollution hotspot in the world. In addition, a new study detailing the world's worst sulphur dioxide (SO2) hotspots, has revealed that the Kriel area in Mpumalanga is the second worst SO2 pollution hotspot in the world. This comes at a time when Minister Barbara Creecy, SA's Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, is considering weakening the SO2 limits, and the National Air Quality Officer, Dr Thuli Khumalo, is in favour of granting Eskom yet another postponement from complying with air quality standards.
