Alternative Personal Transportation in Washington, D.C.
Bikes are parked at a bike station on the National Mall, with the Washington Monument in the background. Washington, D.C. is one of the most powerful cities in the country and within the top twenty-five most populated cities in the U.S., with a population of over 700,000 people. While densely populated, the nation’s capital is one of the greenest cities in the United States, especially thanks to personal transportation. The Capital Bikeshare program provides accessible, affordable, and environmentally friendly personal transportation for commuters, bikers, and tourists alike through the installation of bike stations throughout the greater Washington area. Electric scooters have also transformed personal transportation, with five companies operating hundreds of scooters throughout the city. Up to 4,815 dockless vehicles are permitted to operate in D.C. while there are more than 4,500 Capital Bikeshare bikes.
