On the truck is a banner reading: 'DIE SCHWEIZ LÄSST IHREN MÜLL ILLELGAL IN PORTUGAL. ALU-SUISSE RECYCLING IST BETRUG. GIFTMÜLL ZURÜCK AN ABSENDER ' translated in English: 'SWITZERLAND DEPOSITS THEIR WASTE ILLELGAL IN PORTUGAL. ALU-SUISSE RECYCLING IS FRAUD. HAZARDOUS WASTE BACK TO SENDER!' Some activists with gas mask are cleaning the truck while others are showing a banner with a toxic symbol. The waste was collected in Setubal, Portugal, by Greenpeace and transported across Spain and France back to Switzerland where it was denied entry by customs officials. The waste was originally exported from Switzerland to Portugal for recycling. Locations:Alpine Countries-Basel-Europe-SwitzerlandDate:7 Nov, 1993Credit:© Greenpeace / Dominik LabhardtMaximum size:3072px X 2048pxRestrictions:FOR NON-COMMERCIAL GREENPEACE PUBLISHED MATERIAL. Greenpeace collected the slag from a Portugese waste dump and spent three days transporting it to Basel (November 4th till 7th). The slag was originally sent to Portugal from Switzerland to be recycled. However the faciltities were not available and 30'000 tons of hazardous waste were dumping in the open unprotected since 1987. The waste is endangering the environmental of the Portuguese City Setubal.Already several times Portugal demanded the Swiss authorities to provide for the return of the hazardous waste which Refonda, a subsidiary of Alu-Suisse, has transported illegaly to Portugal. But the Federal Office for the Environment fails to act and Refonda shirks its responsibility. Greenpeace submit accusaition against both of them.
