The Yunnan hemlock forest governs the cool forest ecosystem of northwest Yunnan, and is important habitat for many rare animals and plants.
It is mainly grown at an altitude of 2,400 to 3,500 meters and is characterized by coniferous tree species.
The flora and fauna in Yunnan hemlock forest are very rich and diverse, one of the most diverse vegetation types of the Three Parallel Rivers.
The Three Parallel Rivers of Yunnan Protected Areas, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in Yunnan province, China. It lies within the drainage basins of the upper reaches of the Yangtze (Jinsha), Lancang (Mekong) and Nujiang (Salween) rivers, in the Yunnan section of the Hengduan Mountains. 

云南铁杉，统治着滇西北的温凉性森林生态系统，是诸多珍稀动植物的重要栖息地。它主要生长在海拔2400米到3500米，是滇西北温凉性针叶林的特征性树种。由于云南铁杉林中的动植物非常丰富而多样，也是代表三江并流区域生物多样性最高的植被类型之一。
