At Murphy Oil Refinery After Hurricane Katrina
At Murphy Oil Refinery emergency units from the Environmental Safety and Health Consulting Services arrive to remediate the oil spill. Murphy will not comment the amount spilled but according to the U.S. Coast Guard, 19,500 barrels (1,072,500 gallons) of crude oil spilled from a tank at the Murphy Oil refinery. Much of the oil flowed into residential neighbourhoods around the refinery, making the areas uninhabitable. Local residents report attorneys working for Murphy are seeking to buy their homes to expand the refinery and put a tank farm on their community. This is 30 days after hurricane Katrina hit and devastation is still evident, with villages and towns still flooded with contaminated water from the oil industries. Local residents and officials blame a ruptured Shell pipeline for spreading oil through marshes and communities down river from New Orleans.
