Blockade of Fishing Vessels in Harlingen the Netherlands
Greenpeace activists and Greenpeace vessel Moby Dick have blocked the exit of the port in Harlingen, to prevent the trawlers from going to sea. Activists in inflatable boats with banners are going up and down the blockade to show the fishermen where it is located.
After an hour, the fishermen navigated straight through Greenpeace blockade. The blockade was organized to protect the 'Scholbox', an area of 40.000 square kilometers in the North Sea. The Scholbox is made to protect young and small plaice and was prohibited for bigger trawlers part of the year. Greenpeace demands that the Scholbox is prohibited for trawlers with more than 300 hp the whole year.
This action proved its succes; in 1994 the Scholbox was protected the whole year round.
