The 'banquet' is showing the huge amounts of sea life that dies because of the nets of fishermen in the North Sea. The 11.000 dead crabs, starfish, en undersized fishes on the 100 meter long table are the wasted by-catch of only 2 hours of fishing with one trawler. For every 2,2 pounds of caught plaice or sole the heavy nets of these trawlers kill about 110,2 pounds of soil animals or small fish. A part of that stays behind on the bottom of the sea. What comes up in the nets will be dead when it gets thrown overboard again. By presenting this destroyed marine life Greenpeace wants to show the government the damage these trawlers cause to the North Sea. Locations:Europe-Netherlands-The HagueDate:2 Sep, 2004Credit:© Greenpeace / Andrew KerrMaximum size:2048px X 1343pxKeywords:Actions and protests-Bycatch-Commercial fishing-Day-Death-Fish-Fishing (Industry)-Greenpeace activists-KWCI (GPI)-Oceans (campaign title)-Outdoors-Small group of peopleShoot:Action against Bycatch in the HagueGreenpeace organized a gruesome sea banquet in front of the Dutch Parliament in the Hague. By presenting this destroyed marine life Greenpeace wants to show the government the damage these trawlers cause to the North Sea. "The pointless destruction of marine life and the enormous waste of fish has to stop" says Just van den Broek, Oceans campaign leader at Greenpeace the Netherlands. "Just the trawlers on the North Sea alone are already responsible for throwing 700.000 tons of dead or dying animals overboard. Under which are starfish and crabs but also undersized fish of commercial value like plaice or gurnard. Fishermen are wasting their own profession like this and it has huge consequences for the oceans. Greenpeace wants to have certain areas closed for harmful activities like fishing. Only then will sea life be able to restore itself and give fish populations the chance to recover."
