The proposed expansion of the Abbot Pt Coal Terminal will directly affect the surrounding wetlands. The wetlands are a habitat for over 200 species of birds including the Australian Painted Snipe. Dust from coal trains crossing the wetlands will pollute the water and the infrastructure such as bund walls to hold dredge spoil will damage the water flow. The beach at Abbot Pt is also the site of Aboriginal Middens and Burial Grounds as well as being an important nesting habitat for Green and Flatback Turtles.Locations:Abbot Point-Australia-Great Barrier Reef-QueenslandDate:16 Apr, 2013Credit:© Tom Jefferson / GreenpeaceMaximum size:5286px X 3524pxKeywords:Beauty-Climate (campaign title)-Coal exports-Day-KWCI (GPI)-Landscapes-Nature-Outdoors-Rivers-Scenic-WetlandsShoot:Caley Valley Wetlands on Queensland CoastThe Caley Valley wetlands surrounding Abbot Point provide nesting habitat for many birds including the vulnerable Australian Painted Snipe. The wetlands would be significantly impacted from the proposed coal port expansion at Abbot Point which includes dredging the seabed for the terminal and dumping the sludge within the wetlands. Coal dust from coal trains transporting coal to the port would spoil the water and fluvial flow of the delicate ecosystem.
