Activists climb the smokestack and block the conveyor belt that carries plastic waste into the factory. The bales of plastic are to be used as fuel in the cement kiln and releasing toxic Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) through combustion. Greenpeace activists dump waste on the doorstep of Cementa, located on Gotland Island off the Swedish coast. The action occured after Greenpeace discovered Norwegian waste at the cement kiln incinerator for which the company has no permit. Greenpeace has called in the police to investigate the company. Cementa burns illegally imported Norwegian waste at the cement plant.Locations:Europe-Gotland-Scandinavia-SwedenDate:1 May, 2001Credit:© GreenpeaceDuration:7m57sAudio format:NaturalProduction Type :NEWS ACCESSKeywords:Access blockade actions-Actions and protests-Air pollution-Banners-Bulldozers-Cementa-Chaining actions-Chimneys-Climate (campaign title)-Climbing actions-Factories-Greenpeace activists-Hard hats-Illegal-Incineration-Incinerators-KWCI (GPI)-Machinery-Masks (protective)-Outflow pipes-Painting actions-Persistent organic pollutants-Plastics-Protective clothing-Return to sender actions-Rubbish-Toxic symbol-Toxic waste-Toxics (campaign title)-TyresShoot:Baltic Toxics TourGreenpeace activists protest against the continued release of toxic pollution from the incineration of waste at the Cementa cement factory in Sweden.
