Children Playing Outside of Lescout School in France

Near the village of Lescout there is a big hen factory farm, currently farming 185,000 hens. It is early in the morning and some children are playing in the courtyard of Lescout’s primary school before the lessons of the day start, when this photo was taken. At the time of Greenpeace France’s visit, the only running class left at the school consisted of twenty-three students. The school is located only 500 meters away from the factory farm of Lescout, and is affected by the smells it emits. While visiting the area and interviewing community members, Greenpeace France heard about several cases of illness, including stomach pain and headache. According to reports from Cathy Double (former assistant of the local school) and Jean-Claude Grout (father of a former student) to Greenpeace France at the time of the visit, the nearby primary school of the village was particularly affected. Cathy Double mentioned: “During some mornings, the smell was so corrosive in the throat and nose that on the sake of children’s safety, we preferred to keep them indoors during playtime. Both parents and students reported recurrent stomach and headaches. Some parents of current students are questioning whether their children should continue their education in the school.”

Hen Factory Farm in France

The egg laying hen factory farm of Lescout, Gallès, located a few hundred meters away from the village, is the only industrial facility for animal agriculture of the area and is currently farming 185,000 hens. First built in the 1980s, it steadily grew and was expanded in 2016 to the modern and highly industrial facility it is today. The owner is planning to expand more as a building permit has been requested for a new building. The village of Lescout has only 700 inhabitants. The quantity of hens in the factory farm outnumbers the population of the village by 264 times.
