By boat they bring the first thousand low energy light bulbs to the Frisian island. The action is part of the campaign '1 miljoen spaarlampen', which translates to English as 'One million low energy light bulbs'. Young people on Schiermonnikoog take the initiative themselves in reaction to the growing concern about the climate change and the rising sea level. Under the direction of the Youth Parliament of Schiermonnikoog they visit all the 450 households of the island. The islanders get a starter pack with two low energy light bulbs for free donated by Philips and Greenpeace. 'If we only replace all the incandescent light bulbs in Dutch houses by low energy light bulbs we can already save 14% on the electricity consumption of the households in the Netherlands. So we can make a change', states Greenpeace Climate & Energy campaigner Sharon Becker. The Greenpeace action is part of 'Hier', an initiative of more than 40 charities who take care of the worldwide climate problem.
