Action against Gas Extraction at NAM Platform

Early in the morning three Greenpeace activists climbed on the gas extraction platform of the NAM (Nederlandse Aardolie Maatschappij) at Ameland. The climbers painted the text 'Laat het Wad niet zakken' on the 15 meter high platform. The text translates to English as 'Don't let the Wad go down'. The action is a protest against the leaked out advice of the commission-Meijer to allow the extraction of the wadden gas. The commission admits that there are threats for the Wadden Sea, but they don't give attention to the biggest threat of this nature reserve, namely gas extraction. Greenpeace urges the government to protect the Wadden against all activities that can affect this unique nature reserve, like cockle fishing, gas extraction, shipping, military exercises and climate change. Gas extraction will inevitable lead to  subsidence. The risks attached to subsidence combined to the rise of sea level will be devastating for the nature reserve.
