Climate Change Affecting the Local Shorelines of Assateague Island in Maryland and Virginia
Assateague Island National Seashore, is famous for the wild horses that call it home. Yet over time, this popular vacation destination has been disappearing due to rising sea levels.
As the effects of climate change bring stronger storms to the Maryland/Virginia coast line, the overall landscape of Assateague is under threat.
In response, the National Parks Service has made changes to the structures of the park so that they can be moved. They are restoring the salt marsh and the beaches effected by erosion and establishing enclosures to protect the wildlife of the Assateague National Seashore.
