Climate PKE unloading in Port of Tauranga

Palm kernel expeller (PKE) from Indonesia is unloaded from the 170 metre East Ambition in the Port of auranga, New Zealand.

In 2008 4.7 million tonnes of palm kernel expeller was exported globally. In 2008 New Zealand imported around one quarter of the world's production of PKE(1.1 million tonnes valued at NZ$317 million).

PKE is an important economic product of the destructive palm oil industry. In New Zealand it is used as a supplementary feed for dairy cows. Greenpeace New Zealand is calling for a stop to all palm kernel expeller shipments into New Zealand as its production is helping to drive destruction of rainforests.

Greenpeace is also calling for the Indonesian Government to implement an immediate moratorium on forest and peatland destruction for the sake of climate stability, biodiversity and to protect the livelihoods of forest dependent peoples.

Palm Kernel Ship Blockade in NZ

Greenpeace activists carry out an action against the cargo ship East Ambition transporting a shipment of palm kernel animal feed from Indonesia and destined for Fonterra dairy farms. Greenpeace is calling on John Key, New Zealand’s Prime Minister, to halt imports of palm kernel due to its impact on deforestation and climate change and address intensive dairy farming in New Zealand. The ship’s cargo has contributed to the release of up to 364,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. That’s the same as the emissions from 127,000 cars over a year.
