Small boulders and debris have fallen into the crack. Also visible is a thinner open crack, free of debris and snow, suggesting recent movement. It is anticipated by scientists studying the glacier that as this crack continues to actively widen, that a piece will break off- an ice island- will float away into the Petermann fjord and beyond to the sea. The glaciologists on site have named the vulnerable pieces 'A' 'B' and 'C'.Locations:North America-Petermann Glacier-Western GreenlandDate:7 Jul, 2009Credit:© Nick Cobbing / GreenpeaceMaximum size:3595px X 5392pxKeywords:Climate (campaign title)-Cold-Copy space-Day-Glacier melt-Glaciers-Ice-Icescapes-Men-One person-Outdoors-Scientists-WhiteShoot:Glaciology Research in Western GreenlandIn summer 2009, the MY Arctic Sunrise sails to the Arctic to document the dire effects climate change has on one of the most fragile environments in the world. Independent scientists use the ship, helicopter, boats and assistance of the crew, to collect data and research the impacts of climate change. During this first section of the three-part tour, scientists conduct important glaciology research on Petermann and Humboldt glaciers in Western Greenland.Related Collections:Best of Arctic Impacts ExpeditionArctic Tour 2009 (Photo & Videos)Petermann Glacier in Greenland
