Deforestation in Alberta's Tar Sands Region

Clear cutting and deforestation in the Alberta Tar Sands releases on average 8.7 megatonnes of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere on a yearly basis. This is not accounted for in the government and industry's calculation of climate impacts from the Tar Sands, currently evaluated at 36 megatonnes per year.

Alberta Tar Sands

Canada's tar sands are an oil reserve the size of England. Extracting the crude oil called bitumen from underneath unspoiled wilderness requires a massive industrialised effort with far-reaching impacts on the land, air, water, and climate. Greenpeace is calling on oil companies and the government to stop the tar sands, for the sake of people and the planet.
