The production of palm oil is causing massive amounts of biodiversity loss as areas of Indonesian forest are cleared to make space for the cash crop. The natural peatlands are drained and the area is burned in order to make space for plant palm oil saplings. This process of deforestation releases vast amounts of peatland carbon in the form of carbon dioxide, which is the leading greenhouse gas. The industry is proving to be a climate hazard and a threat to the natural habitat of many species living in Indonesian forests.
