However, the women themselves say that people in the outside world would not understand how hard it is to raise one pig or harvest one grain of rice.Locations:Asia-China-Great Areca village, Gasa town-Xinping County-Yunnan ProvinceDate:1 Jan, 2005Credit:© Greenpeace / Ma MeiyanMaximum size:3017px X 4486pxRestrictions:No FundraisingKeywords:Children-Day-Farmers-Happiness-Indigenous People-KWCI (GPI)-Local population-Organic farming-Outdoors-Rice-SAGE (campaign title)-Traditional costumes-Two people-Villages-WomenShoot:Rice Farmers Photography Project in ChinaFive rice farmers from the Yunnan Province with no experience in photography were given a camera and asked to document their sustainable rice farming methods over the space of a year to highlight the potential of ecological agriculture. The farmers are part of a strong, local community, indigenous to the area. They work closely with the land, cultivating the rice and soil. The project, entitled ‘Rice is Life’ presents authentic evidence to show the importance of rice and ecology and the interaction between rice and culture amongst rice farmers. This is set against the growing trend in genetically engineered rice and the potential risks involved.
