Ecological Farming Practices in Three Counties in Kenya
Farmers in Kenya are effectively applying ecological farming practices that are increasing their ability to build resilience to and cope with climate change.
Kenya’s food system is broken. Industrial agricultural practises threaten food security. These practises have not only negative effects on the environment but also the smallholder farmers who currently feed the nation. While big corporations reap the economic benefits that cash crops bring, the environment and the people who depend on it are suppressed and subjected to the negative effects of industrial agriculture propagation. Governments and corporations are putting their interests before humans and the environment. There is an over-dependence on hybrid seeds, fertilisers and chemical pesticides to increase food supply and the belief that industrial agriculture is the solution to food insecurity. There is a misconception that ecological agriculture does not increase yields hence farmers shy away from it. By documenting successful stories from farmers who have practiced and seen the benefits of ecological farming, we aim to showcase ecological agriculture as the solution to food insecurity in Kenya. We also aim to challenge the broken food system and present ecological farming as a sustainable solution to food security in Kenya
